Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
